The uThukela Marine Protected Area (MPA)

Stretching from the Tugela River mouth to 2 km north and extending 10 km upstream, Tugela Mouth beach is part of the uThukela MPA - a vital ecological hotspot teeming with marine biodiversity.

The uThukela MPA protects diverse marine habitats, including:

• 🌊 Deep reefs
• 🌿 Seagrass beds
• 🌱 Mangroves

These ecosystems support species like hammerhead sharks and seahorses while playing a crucial role in:

• Carbon sequestration
• Coastal stability
• The survival of numerous marine species
